Going through menopause: symptoms and methods to deal with it
Menopause is something that almost all women will experience to a degree as they get older. Going through menopause is something experienced most commonly by women in their forties and fifties, and is also known as the "change of life". While going through menopause brings with it quite a few changes to your body and to the way you feel physically and emotionally, it is something that can be dealt with. Menopause occurs when you stop going through your menstrual cycle, meaning that menstruation stops due to changes in levels of the female hormones progesterone and estrogen. While menopause usually occurs due to reaching a particular life stage, it can also be surgically induced by operations such as the removal of the ovaries.
When going through menopause, there are a number of symptoms that you'll likely find yourself experiencing. These include emotional symptoms such as sadness and irritability. Many women will comment that they find themselves feeling very emotional and fragile, and may find themselves crying at small and insignificant things. This is quite common, and is related to the different levels of hormones now found in the body. These levels will change over time, and it may take time for some women to adjust to these changes when they are experiencing menopause. For some women these can be worse than for other women, so if you are experiencing severe mood swings or other related problems, you may wish to consult with your doctor.
The experience of menopause also brings with it a number of physical changes. The first of these is the gradual ceasing of menstruation. This is usually a key sign of experiencing menopause. Usually it takes about a year or so of stopped periods before a woman can be officially sure that she is going through menopause. In this first year, women who have stopped having their periods should still ensure that they use a form of contraception, as there is still a low risk of conception as the menstrual cycle adjusts. Other common physical changes associated with menopause are hot flushes, vaginal dryness, headaches, weight gain, tiredness and trouble sleeping, and hot flushes or hot flashes. The severity of these will vary between different women, and may be problematic for some while being barely noticeable for others. However, women should be aware that these sorts of physical symptoms may present themselves, and should be ready to deal with them as required.
